Curbside Garbage Survey

During the 2007 budget year, Council began investigating possible opportunities to implement a municipal curbside pickup program for both household garbage and recyclables. Currently; the municipality operates four (4) transfer station locations where residents can drop off their household garbage and recyclables. These waste materials are then transported by truck to the regional landfill in Libau.
As our municipality continues to grow with more and more housing developments on the horizon, our Transfer Stations are quickly outgrowing their capacity to efficiently collect and store these increasing volumes. Rising fuel and transportation costs are also nearing the point where another option may be more suitable.
Our municipality covers a vast land area, with many seasonal residents in the cottage areas, and others in remote farming locations. Over 50% of our municipal residents are located between East Selkirk and our southern borders. All of these factors create a very dynamic challenge when considering any program of this type. We would like to see our recycling efforts increase in the municipality while moving to a more convenient, modern approach to handling our solid waste.
Preliminary estimates are underway and recognizing that many residents currently use private contractors to provide this service, the municipality must carefully consider both the benefits and impacts of implementing any such program. We will be continuing to investigate our options further during the 2008 fiscal year but would like to receive as much feedback from residents as possible. Please help us with this project by returning your comments to the municipal office or transfer stations.

Not only is it great fun - but we also perform for a variety of community events such as the St. Peter's Advent Service in early December, the community Ecuminical Easter Service and a variety of other invitations such as the Selkirk Mental Health Centre and nursing homes in the area.
Please contact Thea at 757-4411 or Jane at 482-5919 for more information. No experience necessary - just a love of singing!
